10/13/24 Sunday Night Update

10/13/24

Hello Dragon Nation!

A deep, heartfelt thank you from the PTSA Fall Festival Committee to all who volunteered, sponsored booths, supported our students, and attended Fall Fest 2024! Even with our date change, we had amazing booth sponsors, volunteer signups, record-breaking ticket sales for the fest, passion from our entertainers, and fantastic student involvement. The beauty of Fall Fest is to provide a safe space for our students to learn how to organize activities, recruit volunteers, work within rules/regulations, fundraise for future benefit, muster courage to perform in front of crowds, and so much more.

Just a few more items to help close out Fall Fest 2024.

  • Event Survey: We love feedback! Please share your thoughts about your 2024 Fall Festival experience in the linked survey (https://forms.gle/vQfYWSeVhTV2z7ncA) by Friday, October 25th.
  • Borrowed Items: Please pick up items you allowed the PTSA to borrow for Fall Festival by Friday, October 18th in the Bluestone entrance.
  • Join MLWGS PTSA: We’re not just bake sales and book fairs. We advocate for school funding and education. We create opportunities for student and faculty enrichment. We support our students from the moment they step into MLWGS into their alumni years. Please become part of the team and join the PTSA today: https://app.etapestry.com/cart/GSGISFFoundationGovernorsS/default/category.php?ref=185.0.191974557

Thanks for your continued support!

2024 Information Forum

Students! If you love Maggie Walker and want to be the face of your school for next year’s Freshmen, consider volunteering at the Info Forum, on Saturday, Oct. 26. At this event, students and faculty introduce Maggie Walker to 8th-graders (and their families) who are considering applying. We’re looking for students who can represent our school admirably in Q&A breakout sessions. Earn community service hours, get a free lunch, and make people fall in love with Maggie Walker! If you’d like to apply, fill out THIS SURVEY no later than 3pm on Monday, Oct. 14. Those selected will be informed by Friday, the 18th. Questions? Contact Mr. White at [email protected].

PSAT Day Information

PSAT Day will take place on Friday, October 18th. Sophomores and juniors will test from approximately 8:40-11:15. Students will report to 1st period for attendance.

Students and parents are encouraged to visit PSAT Family Guide for additional information about the digital PSATs.

Students are allowed to use their personal device for testing. Personal devices can include a Mac or Windows device or an iPAD. Students are not allowed to use a personal Chromebook. Your device must also be able to connect to Wi-Fi and be charged enough to stay on for roughly 3 hours. We recommend you bring a power cord or portable charger, but we can’t guarantee you’ll have access to an outlet. You’re permitted to bring an external mouse for your device and an external keyboard if your device is a tablet. You can’t use detachable device privacy screens. All other applications and programs must be closed during the test. Students can complete this form if they will need to borrow a device on test day.

Ms. Cobb will be visiting English classrooms the week of October 7th to help students prepare for the day. Please feel free to contact Ms. Cobb at [email protected] if you have additional

questions.

AP Exam Fee Payment

Attention Advanced Placement (AP) students and their parents: AP exam fees were incorporated into student fees this year. We realize that AP exam fees can be costly and may need additional time for payment. As announced earlier in the school year, families may pace themselves through paying for AP exams through November 1st. Beginning November 2nd, the $40 College Board late fee will be applied. If you think your family may be eligible for a fee waiver, we have extended the deadline to complete the fee waiver application to October 15th: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Dfkh5XOd7bL4VAIBLcWP9xnwQUDlHTVXZaWPEUqj1rE/edit?usp=sharing

All details about AP exam ordering and the timeline leading up to May testing can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hlRy5aJqGrIL4rzVlf8MbMvnCA2cWqgt/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=107178821893099947385&rtpof=true&sd=true

School Pictures

Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors! School picture makeups and retakes will be taken on Wed, Oct. 16, during 1st and 3rd blocks. Announcements will be made, and you will be called to the Commons in alphabetical groups by grade (e.g., “Juniors with last names starting A through H).” You don’t need to sign up. If you are taking a quiz or test when your group is called, you may go to the Commons with another group, but the entire process will likely conclude before lunch, so your window is fairly narrow. This is your last chance to be photographed for the Yearbook.

History Honor Society Tutoring

The TJ National History Honor Society is hosting its History Tutoring Lab sessions every Monday in room 231 during lunch. TJHHS members will be available for general history/social science (for all Social Studies courses) tutoring and Global 10 Paper content assistance. There is no need to sign up as the lab is fully staffed with members of the society to assist you.

College Visits

This fall, over 80 colleges and universities will be sending admissions representatives (either in-person or virtually) to meet with MLWGS students in grades 10, 11, and 12 during lunch (Monday-Thursday).  Sign-ups and passes are not required—students simply may travel to the location of the presentation of their choice after the dismissal of their 3rd or 4th block class.  An updated calendar of college visit rep visits (as of October 11th) can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g0lyV3MXzJZzWxBjW0xONjVT_IfyqdROI3czy6WT9IM/edit?usp=sharing

Tonight’s quote comes from Delores Huerta who said, “We must use our lives to make the world a better place to live, not just to acquire things. That is what we are put on the earth for.”

Have a great evening and GO DRAGONS!
