MLWGS senior wins National Gold Medal & American Visions Award in Scholastic Art & Writing

Congratulations to Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Senior, Kori Benjamin (Chesterfield), for receiving a Gold Medal in the NATIONAL Scholastic Arts Awards. Additionally, her work was also chosen as an American Visions Medal award winner (the equivalent to “best in show”) for her drawing, “Girls with Guns.” 

Kori is the third Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School student to receive this high honor at the national level. This year the exhibition will be at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City and the awards ceremony will be held at Carnegie Hall where Kori will get to walk across the stage to be recognized. Please join us in congratulating her on this outstanding national award!

Additionally, three other Maggie L. Walker students were the recipients of national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Senior, Annabel Tang (Henrico), received a Gold Medal in writing for her work titled, “Fractured Lines”. Junior, Sydney Brewer (Chesterfield), received a Gold Medal in writing for her work titled, “Smile”. They will both be recognized at the ceremony in New York. Finally, Junior Shorya Malani (Henrico) received a national Silver Medal for his photogram titled, “The Shaking City”.
