Our community has much to celebrate and be grateful for this season. Michael White and the Yearbook staff (The Vault) earned superior ratings from the VHSL for their 2025 book, “It’s So Worth It.” Our Model United Nations team traveled to UVA this past weekend for the VAMUN Conference, where NINE Maggie Walker students—Priya Kumar, Aarya Karmakar, Rewa Totey, Ari Johri, Priyanka Nyamtabad, Aditiya Singhal, Ethan Roerink, Anubhav Joshi, and Alina Laraway—were recognized for their excellence. Staff and students also participated in a “Blue Out” in recognition of World Diabetes Awareness Day.
This past Monday, Ms. Kristen Macklin and her German IV and V AP students unveiled a collaborative installation created with the Goethe Institute and the German Embassy in Washington, D.C., featuring a panel discussion, a string quartet performance, and thoughtful dialogue on sustainability and the enduring partnership between the German and American people. Through this immersive experience, students reflected on global environmental efforts while considering the beauty and significance of our own James River.
Our varsity boys volleyball team advanced in postseason play and concluded their season in a hard-fought match against Atlee High School; we are proud of their resilience, teamwork, and sportsmanship and grateful to the athletes, coaches, parents, and fans who supported them.
As we prepare for the upcoming Virtual Instruction Days on November 24 and 25, we want to note that these serve as an important practice opportunity for potential inclement-weather closures later in the year—one synchronous day and one asynchronous day will allow us to ensure instructional continuity no matter the conditions. The building will be closed on November 24th and 25th. We will return to school on Monday, December 1st.
As we head into the holiday, I am deeply thankful for the dedication, compassion, and partnership shown each day by our students, staff, families, and community. Wishing all of you a warm, safe, and restorative Thanksgiving break.
Kristin Janssen, MLWGS Executive Director
