8/25/24 Sunday Night Update

School will be closed Friday August 30th through Monday September 2nd in observance of Labor Day.

MWTech

We have launched our refreshed and updated school website for the opening of the 2024-25 school year.  Site navigation is very similar to last year, now with mega menus, button links, and a modern design for improved interaction on mobile devices and ADA compliance.  Our URL has not changed, and you can visit our website here:  mlwgs.com.  Please note that our school calendar once again integrates all school events, including our VHSL Athletics.

We have also updated our school wireless network infrastructure.  All students have been sent instructions on how to connect their personal device(s) to our system via both school email accounts and Schoology class groups.  As onboarding 1,600+ student devices is a large task, we are phasing in student personal laptops.

  • Week of August 26th:  All Freshmen and Sophomore personal laptops should connect to Walker WiFi.  Again, instructions will be sent via school email and Schoology.
    • Returning Juniors and Seniors will continue to connect all personal devices to our Dragon Guest WiFi.   Students are currently able to access all necessary school information and applications from our guest network.
    • All student Smartphones: Use Dragon Guest WiFi

From the Clinic

If you received a targeted email from Nurse Shapiro regarding still needing documentation of your meningococcal vaccination and haven’t sent that in yet, please email Nurse Shapiro proof of this vaccine to [email protected] or call at 804-354-6800 x 1010 as soon as possible. You will need this on file in order to continue coming to classes. Deadline for submission is September 3.

All medical forms for the 2024-2025 school year should be submitted this month to the school nurse, Alisa Shapiro. This includes all students who have a medical condition or a life-threatening allergy or if they would like to either self-carry medications or have access to over-the-counter medications here at school.

Athletics

Welcome Back Dragons!  If you plan to play a sport this year you must have completed this paperwork. Once completed, please send to [email protected] as PDF file.

AP Exam Ordering Information and Payment

Information about AP exam registration can be found on the following document, which was distributed in hard copy during the first week of school to all students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Registering for AP exams is a two-step process:

  1. “Join” the course in MyAP (students must enter a specific join code for each exam into their College Board account) and
  2. Pay the AP exam fee ($99) for each course through assigned school fees in the OSP system.

We realize it is new this year to include the AP exam fee(s) upfront with the school fees, and please know that families that need it have until November 1st to pay for all exams without any form of late fee. Choosing to spread out AP exam payments through November 1st requires no additional forms or documentation. Beginning on November 2nd, the College Board’s $40 add/drop fee will be instituted for late payments, exam registrations, or exam cancellations made after this date.

The linked document above also contains details about special situations such as how students can communicate

  • if they wish to “opt-out” of taking an AP exam (primarily for seniors who have researched maximum transferable college credit at their prospective colleges),
  • if they want to make a special request for an additional exam over and above the classes in which they are enrolled, or
  • if they need to apply for a fee waiver.

The AP schedule for May 2025 and the final deadline for cancellations may also be of interest.

Please contact Rachel Loving, AP Coordinator, at [email protected] if you have and questions or concerns about AP exam registration and/or payment.

Robotics

Congratulations to the Mech Tech Dragon Robotics Team as they were awarded VHSL Trophy Class for their work last season.   They were one of 3 teams in the Commonwealth to earn this Distinction.

Upcoming Trips

Music Disney Trip

Parents with students enrolled in a Maggie Walker Music Ensemble (Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble) have received information emails and packets for the Disney Trip in January. The deposit deadline for this optional trip is Friday, August 30. Parents can pay by following the link in the email. If you have not received an email from Mr. Merillat, Mrs. Barnes or Mr. Revell, please reach out to them before the payment deadline.

Trip to Peru

Please come to the Peru Trip Information meeting on Thursday, Sept 5th at 6 pm in Room 153, the Adjunct Classroom before Back-to-School night.  It will last 30 mins and end in time to attend the PTSA meeting as well.

Experience “The Inca Trail” in Peru – June 9-17, 2025 with ACIS, our new travel partner!  Enjoy Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, Sacred Valley, Cuzco, Lima, a cultural exchange with the Uros Indians, and many more exciting opportunities to gain first-hand understanding of local culture and taste delicious cuisine all while practicing language skills!  Enjoy double occupancy in centrally located 3 and 4-star hotels, and a private tour once we have 15 registered students.

Let me sign off tonight with some words from the late great blues musician B.B. King.  He said, “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”

Have a great evening and GO DRAGONS!
