Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School will host the 24th annual Governor’s School Model UN Conference (GSMUN) on March 25th and 26th. This year’s theme is “Discover New Paths,” encouraging the roughly 500 participating middle and high school delegates to debate and collaborate on innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing global issues.
Maggie Walker is especially excited to bring GSMUN back to an in-person format for the first time since 2019. This student-run conference gives attendees the opportunity to participate in simulated diplomacy on topics including the usage of STEM to combat food insecurity, equal education opportunities for women in Chad, and a historical crisis concerning the First Triumvirate of Rome.
This year, GSMUN is supporting World Central Kitchen, an international nonprofit organization that works to provide food to communities in nations experiencing economic crises or famine. The conference plans to raise $10,000 for the charity through donations and merchandise sales in addition to the fundraising completed by the club prior to the conference.
In the past, GSMUN has had the opportunity to host prestigious speakers from across the globe, including the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Powers, and former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. This year’s keynote speaker will be Charles Horner, a China Scholar who served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Associate Director of the U.S. Information Agency during the administrations of President Ronald Reagan. Delegates will have the opportunity to participate in a Q and A with Mr. Horner after his keynote speech to deepen their understanding of global politics from his perspective and experiences.
