Have you ever wondered how we make the decision to delay or close school at MLWGS? I thought it may be a good idea to share how we make these decisions since it seems like we are off to an earlier start this year with weather issues.
To begin with, we are totally dependent upon the transportation decisions of our 12 districts that send us students. As a result, our decisions will always come out after the other cities and counties make theirs. We try to get our word out by 6:00am, but sometimes it may be a little later.
The first thing that we do is look at the four largest divisions that we serve: Chesterfield, Richmond, Henrico, and Hanover. These students make up about 80% of our population. If three of these divisions close or delay, we will follow suit. If two of these divisions close or delay, we take a closer look at the surrounding divisions and see how many of them are closed or delayed. Additionally, we always take a good look at Richmond as our building is physically located in the city. In these cases, we will always err on the side of caution.
Remember, if your district is delayed or closed and we are open, you follow the rules of your district. Any absence or loss of time due to a conflict between our schedule and your home district’s schedule is an excused absence. If you can make it in, that’s great, but not expected. Please know that we always put your safety first and if conditions are not safe for travel, please remain at home. Work can always be made up.
I hope this sheds a little light on what always seems to be a mystery! As always, email me if you have any questions.
