MLWGS Math Modeling Team Wins Scholarship Money in Contest

Congratulations to the math modeling team of Adriel Barretto (’21-Henrico), Zach Fee (’21-Henrico), James Hall (’21-Chesterfield), Ken Zhang (’21-Chesterfield), and Hunter Zoller (’21-Chesterfield) for their success in the recent MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge.  In this prestigious international competition, they were designated as Honorable Mention which earned the team $1,000 in scholarship money.

In this year’s challenge, students were asked to ‘bridge the digital divide’ by creating mathematical models to determine the cost of Internet connectivity, estimate household needs and then create an optimal plan for placing nodes and cell towers to meet that need.  The team created a series of models including different types of regression and decision trees.  At the end of this 14-hour contest, the team had churned out an outstanding 21-page paper.  Well done, boys!
