MLWGS SNAPSHOT #11, Celebrations and Accomplishments

Fall gathering

As we round out the first nine weeks, our school community continues to shine through its many celebrations and accomplishments. Over the past week, we have recognized our seniors at athletic ceremonies, enjoyed outstanding performances at the orchestra concert, and participated in several successful recruitment events. We also celebrated our National Merit Scholars, honoring their hard work and academic excellence. This past Friday, our Fall Festival was a wonderful success, filled with great performances, delicious food, and a strong sense of community. Many thanks to our PTSA for organizing such a fun and meaningful event that brought students, families, and staff together.

Our students have also been extending their learning beyond the classroom. Under the guidance of Mr. John Clark, AP U.S. History students visited the Virginia Museum of History and Culture to tour the Revolutionary Virginia and Unbound exhibits. The trip offered a valuable opportunity for students to connect their study of the American Revolution with real-world historical perspectives.

Looking ahead, Monday, October 13, is a student holiday and teacher workday, allowing faculty time to plan, grade, and prepare for the upcoming quarter. We are also looking forward to Homecoming 2025 on Saturday, October 18, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. This year’s theme, “Hawaiian Night,” promises to be a joyful celebration of school spirit hosted by our Junior Class. The event will take place outdoors on the MLWGS field, or inside if weather requires, with a semi-formal dress code and plenty of Dragon pride on display.

As we close one quarter and look ahead to the next, we remain grateful for the continued partnership of our families and the dedication of our faculty and students. The collaboration, curiosity, and enthusiasm that define our community continue to make Maggie Walker a truly special place to learn, grow, and celebrate together.

Go Dragons!

Warmly,

Kristin K. Janssen, Executive Director

As a reminder, please help prevent the spread of infection by staying home if you are actively sick.  More specifically, you need to stay home if you have had a fever that is over 100.0 in the last 24 hours or have had any vomiting or diarrhea in the past 24 hours. If you are feeling sick and have cold symptoms, consider wearing a mask and washing your hands or using hand sanitizer throughout the day to protect others.
All medical forms for the 2025-2026 school year should be submitted this month to the school nurse, Alisa Shapiro, [email protected]. This includes all students who have a medical condition or a life-threatening allergy, or if they would like to either self-carry medications or have access to over-the-counter medications here at school.
Please find forms online here: https://mlwgs.com/parent-resources/annual-student-forms/
For our sophomore families: Vision and hearing screenings will be completed on all 10th-grade students, as this is required by the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Parents have the option to have their child opt out of the screenings with written parent notification to Alisa Shapiro at [email protected]. The school nurse will complete these screenings for early identification of deficits.
Parents are notified of results if further evaluation is indicated. Parents and teachers may request vision and/or hearing screening for any student with written parental permission.
MLWGS students in grades 10-12 are invited to attend College Rep Visits in our building during their lunch block throughout the month of October.  Locations of these presentations will be posted on the daily morning announcements and a board outside the Counseling Office.  A list of colleges (and their admissions representatives) who are scheduled to speak with our students this fall can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QuwhXAKlurzQ9cpH6e2drkaRqFmiY4jmh4Tw-geI9rw/edit?usp=sharing
