Success Stories 2014-2015

The Class of 2015: 172 Graduates, 36,027 hours of community service, awarded over $18.9 million in scholarships, their average GPA was 4.08, their average SAT score was 2089 (Math-694, Reading-711, Writing-685), 24 were National Merit Finalists and 62 more received Commendations in the National Merit Program.  9  received National Merit Scholarships and  5 were Presidential Scholar Candidates and 1 became a Semi-Finalist.

Daily Beast TOP HIGH SCHOOLS 2014 (MLWGS-12th Place). Six indicators were culled from school surveys to compare public high schools in the U.S., with graduation and college acceptance rates weighed most heavily. Other criteria included: college-level courses and exams, percentage of students with free or reduced lunch, as well as SAT and ACT scores – another mark of how well a school prepares students for college.

MLWGS is cited by VA Living 2014 Top High Schools & Colleges Editor’s Choice Awardrecognizing schools for their excellence and innovation in the following categories: Arts & Humanities, Science, Math & Technology, Performing Arts, Health & Medicine and Capital Improvements.

Four MLWGS students attend 2014 Summer Governor’s School Academies spending weeks immersed in a language or program.

VCU Medical Science Internship Program (MSIP) – two MLWGS students were accepted into the selective. VCU MSIP, a six-week summer program that provides high-school students the opportunity to work in a research lab at VCU with a scientist.

MLWGS Student wins U.S. Department of State NSLI-Y Scholarship to study Arabic in Morroco for the summer.

Two Students Have Work Accepted to Library of Virginia: one chose to examine the integration of Charles City County Schools and another researched the journey of Martha Grattan, an MLWGS parent, who entered Washington and Lee University in 1985 as a member of the school’s first female class.

Scholastic Southeast Region-at-large Writing Key Winners. In this competition, student awards included: 3 Gold Keys including two in poetry and one in flash fiction; 5 Silver keys including 2 in Flash Fiction, 2 in poetry, and 1 in Short Story; and 3 Honorable Mentions including 2 in poetry and 1 in personal essay/memoir.

We the People captured the regional and state championship for the 17th time on January 30, 2015. We the People team members study a broad range of topics related to American government and constitutionalism and prepare for a simulated congressional hearing during which judges ask questions and score units based on knowledge and articulation.

We the People Captures 2nd Place in National Title. After two days of competition held the last weekend of April in Washington, DC, the MLWGS team advanced to the final round of competition on Monday, April 27th. Final standings were announced at a huge banquet that evening with representatives from all 50 states for more than 1,200 high school students.

Model United Nations Club hosts former Federal Reserve Chairman Dr. Ben Bernanke at GSMUN, March 20-21, 2015.

Model United Nations Club competed at VAMUN XXXIV. Students win gavels for Roman Senate,  Nicaraguan Assembly,  Committee on Treatment of Modern Art, and US Southern Command Committee.

Forensics Team takes 3rd Place at the VA Catholic Forensic League State Championship with students qualifying for nationals. One Walker sophomore excelled at the National Championships as finished as a quarter finalist.

Debate Team takes 2nd Place at the VA Catholic Forensic League State Championship with four students qualifying and competing in the national championships in May.

MLWGS BoB Squad Among World’s Best Team: Ranked by hsqbrank.com, a website that ranks quiz bowl and academic teams by their statistical performances at various tournaments. The publisher wrote as of March 8th, “the quiz bowl team from Maggie Walker is currently ranked 10th in the world and 2nd in the state of Virginia for the 2014-15 high school quiz bowl season.” Additionally, MLWGS is “just 24 schools with two teams in the rankings; your “B” team is currently ranked 125th in the world and 7th in Virginia.”

MLWGS Wins State VHSL Scholastic Bowl Championship. The team has won States 6 times since 1998, including 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years.  The team also came in 2nd place 9 times since 1999.

BoB Squad ‘A’ Team  Paced 5th at HSNCT in Chicago, IL out of 272 teams.

BoB  Squad Wins 3rd Place at PACE in Reston, VA out of the 96 teams that competed.

Walker Model Congress welcomed Dr. Charles Sydnor, a nationally recognized expert on the Holocaust, as this year’s keynote speaker WMC 2015. As an expert witness for the U.S. Department of Justice from 1981-2006, he helped revoke the citizenship of 23 Nazi war criminals who had been living in the United States.

MLWGS Model Congress excels at UPenn Conference, one of the most prestigious Model Congress conferences in the nation.

MLWGS Math Modeling Team Competes as the Only High School in the  Nation at the SABR Conference March 12-16, 2015 in Phoenix.  The competition pits undergraduate students from colleges and universities across the country against each other in an analytic major league baseball operations decision — the type of decision a team’s general manager and staff are faced with over the course of a season.

Walker’s Mech Tech Dragons Robotics Team wins back-to-back Entrepreneurship Awards at VAR.

Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Chess Clinic to Feature Grandmaster Sergey Erenburg in Simultaneous Chess Exhibition. The MLWGS Chess Club, the Virginia Scholastic Chess Association, and the Capital One Volunteer Corps hosted a Free Chess Clinic for Richmond area school-age chess players on January 13th, 2014.

MLWGS Chess Team Wins 2nd Place at the Virginia Scholastic and Collegiate Chess Championships, in the K-12 section.

MLWGS Green Dragons finished the final round of the National High School Chess Championships in Columbus, Ohio with solid results. In the U800 section, Walker’s team finished 21st place. A Walker team of freshmen finished 61st. The U800 team placed 19th overall in the final standings.

MLWGS Life Smarts Team finished 2nd at the State Competition.

MLWGS Economics Regional Champions: Region 1 Champions of the State Championship Economics Quiz Bowl held at VCU in April.

MLWGS Economic Quiz Bowl DOE Region #1 Winner and headed to the ADAM SMITH State Championship Economics Quiz Bowl at VCU in April. 

Moody’s Mega Math Challenge: MLWGS’s team competed in the M3 Challenge in NYC during April as one of the six best teams in the nation, ultimately finishing in 5th place and winning $5,000 from 1,128 papers submitted.

MLWGS Scholastic Southeast Region-at-large Art Winners received a total of (54) awards: 1 Gold Art Portfolio, 14 Photo Gold Keys, 6 Art Gold Keys, 4 Silver Photo Portfolios, 5 Art Silver Keys, 2 Photo Silver Key, 3 Honorable Mention Photography Portfolios, 13 Photo Honorable Mentions, 6 Art Honorable Mentions.

MLWGS National Scholastic Art Winners: one student won a Silver Medal for her print, “Virgin of the Christmas Lights” and another received a Silver Medal for her video/performance piece, “Swivel”, in the “Future New” category. Both picked up their prize at Carnegie Hall in New York during the national celebration of excellence in the visual arts.

 Fall Drama: ‘You Can’t Take It With You’ by George Kaufman and Moss Hart, performed November 20-22, 2014.

Spring Drama: ‘Into the Woods’ by Stephen Sondheim performed March 12-14, 2015.

MLWGS Students Play with Richmond Symphony Orchestra. Orchestra students played “Side by Side” with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra at Richmond Center Stage.

MLWGS Orchestra I and Orchestra II class Wins Excellent and Superior Ratings for an overall rating of Excellent during the District One Orchestra Assessment Event.

Three MLWGS Students Chosen for All-District Chorus selected from more than 1,200 auditions from the Richmond area.

Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School is the 1st School in VHSL history to go six-for-six in state competitions throughout cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.

MLWGS Golf Team Repeating District Champions. Additionally, one student was named to the All-Regional Team.

Field Hockey, Conference, Region and State Runner-up Champions.

Field Hockey Regional Player of the Year.

Field Hockey Conference and Region Coach of the Year: Paige Hawkins. Ms. Hawkins is a 5 time Region of the Year Coach winner, 6 time Colonial District  Coach of the Year winner and 2 time Conference 33 winner.

Three Field Hockey Players are 1st Team All-Region and All-Academic.

MLWGS Regional and State VHSL Diving Champion: It was a first win for the Maggie Walker Swim and Dive Team, with one student took 1st in the Women’s 1-meter dive competition.

MLWGS Swim Team at Regional Competition: At the Regional swim meet, MLWGS Boys came in first and Girls came in a close second plus earned a second place finish at the Swim States.

Two MLWGS Faculty Members present at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Conference in November 2014.

English Department Faculty Member wins the Third Annual Pat Taylor Teaching Award.

Three  MLWGS teachers are selected to participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for Teachers.

Fine Arts Chair was one of three educators selected nationally for the Golden Educators Residency.

Tribute for Gregory ‘Bear’ O’Bryan 1947-2014, on October 24, 2014.  Bear was a distinguished member of the MLWGS faculty for 17 years.
