School Successes

Niche.com ranks MLWGS #15 in their Best Public High School National rankings, #2 in Virginia, and #1 Regionally. It also ranks the school #1 for Best Public High School Teachers in Virginia.

For the first time, MLWGS wins the VHSL Wells Fargo Cup for Academics. This result was due to Debate participating in VHSL competitions instead of other leagues. 

2019 AP Equity and Excellence Report show the MW class of 2018 scored 97.2% on Qualifying Scores for seniors who scored 3 or higher on at least one AP exam at any point during high school divided by the total number of school seniors.  Nationally, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts ranked 1st among all states with 32.9% of their seniors in this scenario and Virginia ranked 8th with 28.5%. MW far out-paced national/state results. 

 

Student Successes

The Class of 2019 had 13 National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists/Finalists and 46 more received Commendations – 4 were offered National Merit Scholarships. The class had 3 Presidential Scholar Candidates and 1 Presidential Scholar (one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students). The class performed 32,897 hours of community service. As a class, they earned a minimum of $16,185,463 in scholarship offers. The average GPA was 4.21 with an average SAT score of 1411 and ACT score of 32. This class had 2 UVA Jefferson Scholars. 

Four MW students are invited to the Summer Residential Governor’s Foreign Language Academies: French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.

One MW student is invited to the Summer’s Residential Governor’s School for Visual and Performing Arts.

MW senior takes first place in the National Italian Exam, Level 2, winning a 2-week study scholarship abroad in Genova, Italy, summer 2018. 

MW senior named 2018 Russian Scholar Laureate.

MW sophomore presents research at ISEF in Phoenix, earns a trip to the Taiwan International Science Fair

MW senior achieved High School Diploma and Advanced Bach Plaque with the Piano Guild.

 

Team Successes

(2) MW sophomores are recognized as 2019 Virginia Students of the Year by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for fundraising efforts. 

(3) Dragons advance to Statewide History Day Competition. One advances to National competition. 

(2) Dragons take top prizes at the Asian American Celebration, win $1400 for MW Art.

(2) Math Art Seminar students have work chosen for display at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in Baltimore, 2019. 

GSMUN XXII, March 22-23, 2019 with Keynote Speaker Ian Bremmer, President and Founder of Eurasia Group, a leading political risk and research consulting firm. 

MW students not in the Math Art Seminar had work chosen for display at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in Baltimore, 2019. This junior is the youngest MW student to have work accepted to an exhibit curated by this organization. (7) students have worked accepted into the Bridges Mathematical Art annual conference exhibit. 

MW wins back-to-back-to-back SABR Analytics Competition. The only high school to compete in this college-level event.

MW Baseball Seminar Partners with the Richmond Flying Squirrels for Education Day at the Diamond. 

MW is the #1 school in Virginia Math League Competition.

2 MW teams earn scholarship awards in 2019 Modeling the Future Challenge.

(3) MW teams place in 10% of the College-level Math Modeling Contest.

MW Future Problem Solving team wins a berth in International competition. 

2019 Regional Scholastic Art Awards: MLWGS had 59 total awards: 8 Gold Keys, 17 Silver Keys, and 34 Honorable Mentions.  

2019 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards: MLWGS had 11 total awards: 3 Gold Keys, 4 Silver Keys, and 4 Honorable Mentions. 

2019 National Scholastic Writing Awards: MLWGS had two awards: 1 Gold Key and 1 Silver Key.  The Gold Key winner travels to Carnegie Hall for the award ceremony.

We the People team took 2nd place at Regionals in December 2018 but finished strong by taking the State title in January 2019 for its 21st win at the championship.  The team will advance to Nationals later in the spring of 2019. The Walker team attended its 21st national competition in Washington, DC in April where the team finished in 5th place.

Academic Quiz Bowl wins the Regional title and advanced to the VHSL State Championship. The team wins its 3rd consecutive State Championship in 2019.

Dragon Chess wins 1st Place at VA Scholastic K-12 Championship in U1400 team.

MW team wins The Governor’s Challenge in Economics

Athletic Accolades

For the sixth consecutive time, MLWGS wins the VHSL Wells Fargo Cup for Athletics.

Weeks #1, #7, #10, #16 and #22 – Lexus of Richmond, Pursuit of Perfect Leadership Award Weekly WinnerMLWGS Senior wins the 2019 Lexus of Richmond Leadership Scholarship Award.

MW senior named VHSL Class 2A Male Athlete of the Year, a first for the school. A second athlete was recognized for their academic achievements.

MW junior named All-Metro Cross Country Runner of the Year for the second time by the RTD.

MW junior named 2018 USA Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year representing VA.

MW 2018 Boys Cross Country 2A State Champions for the sixth consecutive year. The Girls teams won 2nd place award.

MW 2018 Cross Country…Boys and Girls 2A Regional Winners for the sixth consecutive year with two individual regional champions. 

MW qualified for the 2A Golf State Championship for the first time.

Two MW runners compete at the New Balance Indoor National Track Championship

MW Boys and Girls win Indoor Track State Championship…this is the sixth consecutive year for the girls while the boys recaptured the title this year. 

MW junior is back-to-back 2019 State 2A One-Meter Diving Champion. This represents the fifth consecutive State title for MW in this sport.

MW Swim Teams at Regionals: the Girls repeated their 1st place finish for the fifth consecutive year, while the Boys also earned 1st place repeating their Regional win from 2018.

MW Girls Swim team wins VHSL State Championship for the fifth consecutive year. The Boys Swim team finished 2nd with two individual swimmers placing first in 100-butterfly and 100-breaststroke and the team of 400-free relay also taking first. 

MW Wrestling had 3 Regional Champions and qualifies a record number for the State championship. MW Wrestling had individual State Champion in 2019.

MW Girls Basketball with 3 players earning All-Region team; one on first-team, two on the second team.

MW Girls Basketball tips into the VHSL State Tournament for the first time in school history with an exciting run into the second round. The team finished 4th in the State.

MW Boys Basketball plays in Regional Tournament.

MW Boys and Girls track teams win State Championship. Included were State Championship teams for both teams in the 4×8 relay.  Each team also had a State Champion in Pole Vault with the boy’s team having State Champions in the 800-Meter and 1600-Meter races. 

MW Boys and Girls tennis teams are Regional and State Champions with both also earning doubles titles at regionals and the girls at State.

MW Boys and Girls soccer teams win 2A Regional Championship. The girl’s team also won the State Championship Title. Senior named Class 2A Girls Player of the Year and the coach was named Class 2A Girls Coach of the Year

(2) Dragons have video accepted into VHSL Film Festival. 

 

Faculty Accolades

MW faculty member serving on the 2018-19 Teacher Collaborative Committee at the Federal Reserve in Richmond, VA.

MW librarian publishes another work on the life of Grace Arents, a local philanthropist.
