The Dragon’s Academic Quiz Bowl team wins the 2021 Virtual VHSL 3A State Championship

Congratulations to the MLWGS Academic Quiz Bowl Team for winning the 2021 Virtual VHSL 3A State Championship this past weekend.  The team advances next to the PACE National Championship tournament in early June, which is also in a virtual format.

Bonus…this team also competes in the CBS6 ‘BoB Squad,’ competitions which are still broadcasting on Saturday mornings, advancing to their championship rounds too.

Sponsored by Mr. Adam Rotche and assisted by Ms. Juanita Lasswell, the winning team members are Sonya Stacia-Captain (’21-Henrico), Dennis Plotnikov (’21-Chesterfield), Sam Lichtman (’22-Henrico), Bharathi Kancharla (’24-Henrico), and Sam McNamee (’24-Chesterfield). Other team members that contributed this year are Quinn Kast (’22-Chesterfield) and Sam Fidler (’21-Chesterfield).

“Our team had a lot to overcome this year,” said Mr. Rotche, “we’ve adjusted to practicing and competing remotely and the format of our tournaments is brand new to everyone.  I’m proud of the hard work everyone put into preparing for the season.  Having two freshmen on our A-team points toward a bright future for Maggie Walker Quiz Bowl!”

With this win, the team has a total of (10) VHSL State Championship titles total since 1998 with three consecutive 2017-2019.  2020 was a gap year for all teams due to the COVID pandemic. Additionally, the dragons also hold (10) VHSL 2nd place titles in the same time frame of 1998.
