As a part of Richmond’s noble initiative to recognize notable student athletes who attended its schools, Maggie Walker is proud to recognize its first class of Hall of Fame inductees at a ceremony on January 15, 2016 which was sponsored by our athletic boosters (Rich Schweiker) and athletic department (Paige Hawkins).
WALTER CARTER
Walter Carter attended Carver Elementary, Albert Hill, and Maggie Walker. He was selected in his senior year of high school to the All-State and All-America football teams. He went on to graduate from Florida State University in 1980 were he was a four-year starter. Walter went on to play for the Oakland Raiders in the NFL.
MURRAY “BUS HEAD” WOOD
As a junior on the football team, Bus Head was selected first team All-District and first team All-Region. In his senior year (1970) he was selected first team All-District, Region, and Metro in both football and baseball. Following graduation, he played football at Virginia State University where he was a three year starter and earned recognition as All-Virginia Small Colleges in 1974. After college, Murray became a football, wrestling, and baseball coach at John Marshall High School and VSU. Murray was inducted into the VSU Hall of Fame in 2003.
JOHN W. “POP” WILLIAMS
Williams graduated from Virginia Union University in 1932 and went on to graduate from Columbia with a Masters in History. He began teaching history at Maggie Walker in 1939 where he also coached football, baseball, and track. In 1951, Pop was the first coach to lead the Green Dragons to a 10-0 record and state championship. He was inducted to the VUU Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
PERRY BRIGGS, SR.
Briggs attended Moore Street Elementary and Maggie Walker High School. He was quarterback for the Green Dragons in the first Armstrong-Walker Classic. Subsequent to his tenure at Maggie Walker, Briggs enjoyed a long career at Wonder Bread where he was recognized for his outstanding work. Mr. Briggs has been involved with his church for 76 years as a member of the choir and board of trustees.
SHEILAH BELLE
Sheilah attended West End Elementary, Binford Middle, and graduated from Howard University in 1983. She has pioneered her own gospel broadcasting network and was inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2005. While on the track team, she threw the shot and discus. In the 1977 central region track meet, she threw the discus 141’3” which remains the region record and ranked 21st nationally by Track and Field News. She was selected to be an Olympic Relay Torchbearer in 1996 and 2002.
ROBERT “BOB” DANDRIDGE
Bobby Dandridge attended West End Elementary, Randolph Middle, and Graduated from Maggie Walker in 1965. He went on to graduate from Norfolk State in 1972 and from Hampton University with a Master’s Degree in Counseling in 1994. Bob played from the Milwaukee Bucks from 1969-1977, the Washington Bullets from 1977-1981, and finished his career with the Bucks also in 1981. He was NBA All-Rookie First team (1970), 2-time NBA Champion (1971-1978), 4-time NBA All-Star (1973, 1975, 1976, 1979), All-NBA Second Team (1979), NBA All-Defensive First Team (1979), and inducted to the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame (1992). The Milwaukee Bucks retired his #10 uniform number.
