We just wrapped up our very last middle school recruitment visit! My voice is completely shot, so a massive thank you to the two incredible student volunteers who helped me out. It felt so good to highlight everything that makes our school community so special. Our kids just keep showing up for people. Earlier this week, a partner division reached out seeking panelists for a virtual question-and-answer session. Even though it was a school holiday, four of our students jumped right in to assist. We are constantly getting feedback about how kind and helpful our kids are. For instance, we had make-up pictures this week, and someone just shared that the photographer couldn’t stop raving about what a lovely day she had on our campus.
There is so much incredible learning happening right now, both in and out of the classroom. Our students recently took a trip to the Maggie Walker House, volleyball post-season is in full swing, and Newtowne tutoring and Quiz Bowl are moving right along. We also had a group represent us at the William & Mary Model UN Conference. Plus, our Board Chair spent some quality time on campus visiting everything from the Community Impact and Naturalist’s seminars to Chinese I and Global Studies 9. Her morning was incredibly full and gave her a glimpse into what our students and staff do every day.
Just a quick reminder that we are observing Diwali this coming week, so there is no school for students or staff on Monday. As our community celebrates the Festival of Lights, it’s a perfect reminder of the incredible brightness, energy, and warmth our own students bring into our halls every single day. Enjoy the long weekend, and we’ll see everyone on Tuesday!
Go Dragons!
With Pride,

Dr. Kristin Janssen
Executive Director

Applications are now available for the Summer Residential Governor’s Schools.
All sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. These programs are run by the Commonwealth and provide opportunities for high school gifted students to explore professional and university environments through mentorships and academic enrichment. Information and applications can be found at: https://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching-learning-assessment/specialized-instruction/governor-s-schools/summer-residential-governor-s-schools.
Maggie L. Walker students are grouped together and are not viewed as applicants from their respective school divisions. Applicants should be committed to attend; our school loses a slot if a student is accepted and does not participate. Questions about the programs or application process can be addressed to Joy Cobb, sophomore and junior counselor, at [email protected].
Academic Programs
Academic Programs: Humanities; Mathematics; Science and Technology; Agriculture; Life Sciences and Medicine; Engineering (NASA) (must be 16 by June 18, 2027, and a U.S. citizen); Marine Science.
We can send a total of one nominee for this entire area, with two slots for the School for Agriculture. Students should submit applications to Joy Cobb in the counseling department by January 11, 2027. Please do not submit teacher recommendations at this time. Each academy allows one nominee from our school. Interested students should talk directly with their language teacher soon.
