Last Friday, October 23rd, Teacher Adam Rotche took the Becoming a Naturalist Class to visit the William & Mary Herbarium, where the class heard from Director Beth Chambers about the plant preservation process and research being done using specimens. “I worked in both the herbarium and the Allen lab when I was an undergrad at W&M,” said Mr. Rotche.
Next, the class went to Dr. Jon Allen’s Marine Invertebrate lab, where students were allowed to handle many animals and learned about research the lab was doing, including research by Maggie Walker alum Matilde Quilici.
Lastly, students went to Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve, a salt marsh where they searched for invertebrates in oyster shell habitats – and found a lot!
