Director’s Summer Update

Speech and debate teams 2026

Good Afternoon Dragon Nation!

Let me begin by introducing myself.  I am Dr. Robert Lowerre and I have had the honor of being appointed to the Directorship of the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies.  I can’t begin to describe how excited I am to finally be on campus!  While summer may seem like a down time, when you are new on the job, every day is like drinking from a fire hose!

I have spent 22 years in education, all of which have been in Henrico County.  I started at Highland Springs HS, spent a little time at Fairfield and Rolfe middle schools, served ten years as the principal at Virginia Randolph Community HS, and the last five years as the principal at J. R. Tucker HS.  Tucker houses both a very successful IB program as well as an Advance College Academy that yields Associate Degrees upon a student’s graduation.  As one can see, I have worked in just about every kind of  learning environment and found each to be extremely challenging and rewarding in their own way.

The foundation of my educational philosophy is the firm belief that every student has tremendous value and it is the mission of the learning community to see that the student is prepared for the future that he or she chooses.  This philosophy fits into any learning environment and charges us here at Maggie Walker to provide a meaningful, engaging, and challenging course of study.  Our students are exceptionally gifted and talented and thirst for experiences that may be unavailable elsewhere.  At the same time, I have always recognized that students are children, progressing through their adolescent years at their own pace.  We must always be mindful of this fact as we do our work and try to remember that we were once high school students as well!

Finally, I have a fanatical belief that high school should be fun!  We will celebrate our successes, support our students on the fields, the stage, the concert hall, as well as at events and endeavors that are unique to Maggie Walker.  We will help out our Dragons when they slip and remember that this is a learning community.  Together, we will achieve our goals, and have a great time along the journey!

I can’t wait to see everyone in the fall!

Have a great summer, and as always, GO DRAGONS!

Dr. Robert Lowerre
