In a January 5, 2016 post, we indicated that we were expanding our graduation regalia guidelines to align with the vision of MLWGS graduates as “life-long learners who embrace the responsibility of citizenship, the value of ethical leadership, and the richness of diverse cultures.” To this end, school and teacher leaders collaborated to expand the guidelines pertaining to graduation regalia. Our current practice (est. 2012) permits only the wearing of honor society cords. With the class of 2016 and forward, cords, stoles, or other adornments recognized by MLWGS academic honor societies, and approved regalia reflecting significant school-related leadership, service, or academic competitive achievement in enduring MLWGS organizations will be permitted. With this initiative we aim to bring our practice in line with our vision/mission, make an advance toward recognizing the breadth of students’ accomplishments, as well as provide space for student expression/personalization in the choice of regalia.
The link below outlines our updated guidelines. Requests for “new” regalia will be vetted by a committee consisting of representatives from student, parent, teacher, and administrative leaders. Just 92 more school days until graduation day!
