MLWGS Dragons return in-person at the National Finals of We the People, April 22-24

Posted on

The We the People: The Citizen and Constitution National Finals is a national academic competition that gives students an opportunity to display the civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to effectively participate in our constitutional democratic republic through simulated congressional hearings. Students testify as constitutional experts before panels of judges acting as congressional committees scoring the groups through a performance-based assessment. Each class is divided into six groups based on the six units of the We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution high school textbook. The National Finals are being held April 22 through 24, 2023.

MLWGS has won the national title four times during its 24 appearances at the We the People competition’s 35-year history, the last time was in 2021, and a national top-10-team for most of the other years.

“Maggie Walker’s We The People tradition is now in its 25th year and still going strong,” said Sam Ulmschneider, team sponsor.  “This year’s class has some fascinating questions, from the nature of effective representation to the evolution of the modern presidency and the value of free speech in wartime. They’ve worked exceptionally hard and explored a wide variety of sources and resources to prepare for Nationals this year. They are looking forward to the competition as the culmination of a long year and are ready to demonstrate both their grasp of the value of engaged citizenship in the American system and their ability to defend their own considered views.”

Best wishes, you got this 2023 MLWGS team.
