MLWGS Regional School Board Meeting, including AY2025 Budget Adoption, on Thursday, March 21, 2024 @ 9:00 am

The next scheduled meeting of the Regional School Board will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 9:00 am in Room 153 (Adjunct Classroom) on the campus of the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School.

The board will recognize three presidential scholar candidates from the Class of 2024, winners of the 2024 VHSL Quiz Bowl State Championship, and the talented students of the Maggie Walker orchestra who won multiple ‘Superior’ ratings at their recent assessment.

During the meeting, the board will be asked to approve the current operating financial statements and personnel actions. Other business actions include approval of an update to amended 1070-Procedure Related to International Travel that converts formatting for required information and forms to digital, the AY2025 operating schedule, and minor updates to several policies recently reviewed by the Virginia School Board Association. Lastly, another schedule change will be requested to the AY2024 calendar to accommodate a school holiday on March 29th.

Regular business will include an update from the director on the current strategic plan and first read for the annual authorization for the Director to issue personnel contracts for the next fiscal year, the AY2025 student fees schedule, and an international trip proposal to Peru in June 2025.

The director will be requesting approval for the AY2025 operating budget in this meeting. Dr. Lowerre will be asking for an additional $1,306,153 in spending to cover teacher pay raises and facility maintenance. The proposed budget aims to bring teacher salaries to a competitive level with our partners and includes repairs such as replacing HVAC units, repairing the roofing system, and repaving the parking lot. Dr. Lowerre stated that investing in building system upgrades will provide a more comfortable environment for all of our students and staff, while improving efficiency and resulting in utility cost savings. The public has until March 19th to comment on this proposal through a provided form or during public comments at this meeting before the board finalizes the proposal.

The March meeting packet can be viewed here.

Persons unable to attend in-person but wanting to address the Regional School Board during the public comment period are invited to use this form to submit their comments by 10:00 am, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, or email their remarks to the Deputy Board Clerk.
