MLWGS Regional School Board Meeting, including the FY26 Budget Public Hearing, on Thursday, February 20, 2025 @ 9:00 am

School Board 2025

The public hearing for the AY26 proposed operating budget will be held on Thursday, February 20 2025, at 9:00 am in Room 153 (Adjunct Classroom) during the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Regional Board meeting.

In February, the board will honor the talented student winners of the 2025 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Additionally, Ms. Lynn Foshee Reed will be recognized as the 2025 VCTM High School Mathematics Educator of the Year, along with Mr. Ryan Webb who received the College Board’s Female Diversity Award for his AP Computer Science class. During this month, the board is also recognized for their service to the community.

During the meeting, the board will be asked to approve the current operating financial statements and personnel actions. Additionally, the board will consider a small number of amended policies, a new course proposal for AY2026, and revisions to the AY2025 school operating calendar. The calendar revisions involve changing two scheduled student holidays into instructional days to make up for the loss of instructional time due to weather-related school closures and the City’s water outage in January.

The regular business agenda will include an update from the assistant director regarding the current strategic plan. There will also be a request to postpone the development of a replacement strategic plan for one year to accommodate the director’s absence.

Other items for first reading include a proposal for an international trip to Belize in 2026, a draft of the proposed school operating calendar for AY2026, textbook adoption consideration, the student fee schedule for AY2026, and a review of a one-to-one laptop initiative for students at AY2026.

Included in this meeting, the assistant director will present Maggie Walker’s proposal for the FY2026 operating budget to the board and the public. The school will be asking for an additional $619,250 in spending to cover teacher pay raises and the laptop initiative. The proposed budget continues to lift teacher salaries to a competitive scale with our partners. The public will have opportunities to comment before the board finalizes or changes the proposal in March.

The February meeting packet can be viewed here.

Persons unable to attend in person but want to address the Regional School Board during the public comment period are invited to use this form to submit their comments by 10:00 am, Wednesday, February 19, 2025, or email their remarks to the Board Clerk.
