MLWGS Scholastic Bowl team with the best results since 2015 at HSNCT

The 2024 High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT) was held at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the Hilton Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 24–26, 2024.  The tournament’s preliminary games took place throughout Saturday and on Sunday morning, and the playoff games on Sunday afternoon and evening.

Maggie Walker’s Governor’s School sent three teams to the High School National Championship Tournament to compete in a field of the top 320 teams in the country.  Sam McNamee (’24-Chesterfield) led the ‘A’ team (VA Class 3 Champions) of Timothy Porter (’24-Henrico), Risshi Naavaal (’24-Henrico), and Yash Saxena (’24-Henrico) to 21st place in the tournament, our school’s best performance since 2015!

Brenden Stremler (’25-Chesterfield) led the ‘B’ team of Bharathi Kancharla (’24-Henrico), Liam Reed (’24-Chesterfield), and Devesh Kumar (’24-Hernico) to a 97th place finish, the highest our B team has placed since 2013.  Only ten other B teams in the country placed higher.  Eric Hu (’24-Henrico) led our ‘C’ team of Nate Stewart (’24-Chesterfield), David Lins (’26-Chesterfield), Amanda Campbell (’25-Hanover), and Bladen Kidd (’27-Richmond) to a respectable 212th place; this was the first time we’ve qualified a C team to the tournament since 2006.  Only seven C teams were ahead of us.

All of these students have worked hard practicing and competing all year, but it isn’t over.  We compete in our final tournament of the year at the PACE National Championship on June 8-9 in Reston, VA and we’re excited about a strong finish.

Scholastic Bowl is sponsored by Adam Rotche, Drew Austen, and Juanita Lasswell.
