If you have ever visited the Maggie Walker Governor’s School Counseling Office, Zona Hicks was the friendly face that greeted you. For the last fifteen years (almost sixteen!), she has managed student records as the school registrar. But at the end of December, Zona is retiring from MLWGS to enjoy the next phase of her life with her husband Fred, sons Justin and Bryan, and two grandchildren.
MLWGS Executive Assistant Barbara Marshall said: “Zona came to us at a time of critical need and it’s fair to say the school was fortunate to find such an outstanding role model in her. She has been a quiet rock of dependability and efficiency for the students and community and the ultimate professional. It has been my great pleasure and honor to work with her.”
When asked to offer her thoughts on the MW experience, Zona reflected: “Fifteen years ago when I moved back to Richmond this job was not on my radar, but it has proven to be the most satisfying and rewarding job of my work career. I have tremendously enjoyed my tenure at MLWGS and the people who I have had the pleasure of working with. But most satisfying of all has been watching the talented students enter the school and develop into the leaders of tomorrow.”
Counseling Coordinator Karl Zweerink, who has worked with Zona all of these past fifteen years added, “I can’t imagine a more kind and supportive person than Zona. She has assisted counselors, teachers, and students through the years with a calm and friendly presence. We will miss her grace and patience, and we wish her well.”
Fifteen graduating classes have gone through the school during Zona’s time with us, or approximately 3,000 graduates…that’s a lot of records! And transcripts!
MLWGS Director, Dr. Bob Lowerre, summarized how we all feel; “I have enjoyed working with Zona and appreciate all of her services to the MLWGS community. She is a true professional and I wish her nothing but the absolute best in her retirement.”
Well done Zona Rae Lou Lou, and thank you from all of us!
