Poetry Out Loud: School Winners Announced

Ms. Michele Surat is pleased to announce that Savannah Vonesh (Class of 2021) is this year’s Poetry Out Loud school competition winner. She confidently recited John Berryman’s “Dream Song 14”. Savannah will represent Maggie Walker in the regional competition to be held on February 10. If she wins the regional, she would proceed to the state competition in March. The final step is the National contest held in April in Washington DC.

Senior Kamran Nessar’s recitation of “Self Inquiry before the Job Interview,” was also eloquently delivered and earned him the position of second place and alternate contestant for the regional. In the event that Savannah is unable to attend the regional contest, he will represent Maggie Walker.

Finally, third place was awarded to Shannen Amoako (2021) for her impassioned recitation of “Bereavement” by William Lisle Bowles.

Other participants were Bella Grace Finck, Jaedin Harris, Pooja Muthuraj, Shreyas Muthusamy, Caroline Osenga, Avery Rhoden, Tori “Drew” Rivas, and Elizabeth Thorne. All students will receive certificates of participation.

A special thanks go to Dr. Robert Lowerre who served as the “accuracy” judge and prompter, and Ed Coleman (English) and Kerry Shepherd (English), judges for overall performance.
