STEM Day at MLWGS, December 7, 2019

On Saturday, December 7th, the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School’s robotics team, FIRST Team 422 – The Mech Tech Dragons, is hosting a community STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) event geared toward local middle school students to promote interest and connect them with community STEM organizations. FIRST Team 422 consists of 60 high school students from 12 local school districts. FIRST is an international nonprofit that inspires students through the pipeline programs of Lego League™ through FIRST Robotics Competition™ to pursue the academic sport of robotics.

The event is open to middle school students with the goal of STEM exploration and innovation. The program includes classroom workshops featuring coding, robotics, data analysis, and science activities, as well as exhibition booths and lunch. Presenters include the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority, Maggie Walker’s STEM clubs and programs, and VCU’s science department. This list will be growing and RSVP will be available on the team website as the school year begins. Educational partners are the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond, as well as Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield County Public Schools. Expected attendance is 75-100 middle school students and parents.
