School Successes

MLWGS ranked #8 in Best Public High Schools in the US by Niche. 

MLWGS ranked #59 by Newsweek as Top 500 STEM Schools 2020.

 

Student Successes

The Class of 2020 had 11 National Merit Scholarship Finalists and 47 more received Commendations – 2 were offered National Merit Scholarships. The class had 3 Presidential Scholar Candidates and 1 proceeded to the semi-finalist stage (one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students). The class performed 33,000 hours of community service. As a class, they earned a minimum of $11,720,210 in scholarship offers. The average GPA was 4.3 (a new record!) with an average SAT score of 1411 and ACT score of 31. In total, the Class of 2020 was recognized with 346 different honors, awards, and scholarships. 

Four MW students are invited to the 2019 Summer Residential Governor’s Foreign Language Academies: French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.

One MW student is invited to the 2019 Virginia Institute of Marine Science through the Academic Summer Governor’s Schools.

One MW student wins the 2019 Junior Study Abroad Scholarship at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid during the summer of 2019 for achievement on the National Spanish Examination.

One MW Junior wins Bertie Green Travel Award for the El Dominio Antiguo Chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish National Honor Society) and will travel to Ecuador during the summer of 2020

MW junior wins VA High School Oratorical Contest sponsored by the American Legion. 

Two MW Sophomores spearhead the movement on sanitary product availability in school restrooms and work with the VA General Assembly for the development of legislation.

MW senior named 2019 Russian Scholar Laureate.

MW Junior wins VA Delegate position at the Global Youth Institute of World Food.

MW Junior honored as a national recipient of NCWiT award.

MW Junior was a Snow Queen candidate 2020.

MW Senior splits win for the Crab Trap App, Sponsored by the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences. 

 

Team Successes

2 Dragons advance at District 8 National History Day Competition.

MW Junior takes Grand Prize at Metro Richmond STEM Fair in addition to 1st Place in the Biochemistry Category and advances as ISEF Finalist. Two other Dragons take 1st Place in the Mathematics Category and the Engineering Category. 

MW team takes 3rd place at Future Problem Solvers State Tournament (virtual competition May 2020).

Model UN students win Performance Awards at the UVA Model Conference. Later, students win Best Delegate and Outstanding Delegate Awards at the Johns Hopkins Model UN Conference.

Academic Quiz Bowl wins the Regional title and advanced to the VHSL State Championship.

We the People team took 2nd place at the State competition in January 2020; however, the 1st place winner, Freeman HS, declined to attend Nationals so the MLWGS team will advance to its 22nd showing later in the spring of 2020. MW team takes 3rd place at Nationals (in Zoom format due to COVID-19 shutdown).

Team 422 Robotics wins Entrepreneurship Award at FIRST District Competiton.

MW 2019 Yearbook wins the’ best of’ award.

2020 Regional Scholastic Art Awards: MLWGS had 59 total awards: 12 Gold Keys including 2 Gold Key Portfolios, 22 Silver Keys including 2 Silver Key Portfolio, and 34 Honorable Mentions.  

2020 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards: MLWGS had 16 total awards: 4 Gold Keys including 1 American Voices nominee, 6 Silver Keys, and 6 Honorable Mentions.  

Fall Drama: ‘Almost Maine’ performed November 7-9, 2019.

Spring Drama: ‘The Addams Family’ performed February 27-29, 2020.

MW Junior joins ‘best of the best’ National Association for Music Education – competes in Orlando, Fla. 

2 Dragons awarded positions with the Greater Richmond HS Jazz Band.

9 Dragons play for the Central Regional Orchestra.

MW Sophomore selected for the Greater Richmond Youth Wind Ensemble.

MLWGS Senior wins the 2020 Lexus of Richmond Leadership Scholarship Award.

MLWGS Senior named 2020 RTD Female Athlete of the Year.

Week #6 ,#9 and #16 – Lexus of Richmond, Pursuit of Perfect Leadership Award Weekly Winner

The 2019-2020 sports season ended March 15, 2020, due to the National Emergency and COVID-19 Shutdown.

Two Senior MW males and one freshman female Golfers advanced to the VHSL State Championship. 

Dragon Boys Volleyball advanced to VHSL State Final Championship Game. 3 players named to the All-State Volleyball Team

MW senior earns 3rd straight USATF Athlete of the Week honor. 

 

Athletic Successes

Male and female Xcountry teams win VHSL Regional titles, the first in Division 3B. 

Girls Xcountry team wins VHSL State Championship, Class 3.  One senior wins the individual championship title.

Girls team wins State Runner up in VHSL 3B Indoor Track Championship. MW senior added 2 more State titles to her incredible career as a Dragon with Titles #13 and #14.

This season marks the end of the switch from 3 divisions to 6 in VHSL with Maggie Walker taking home a state trophy (1st or 2nd) in all 20 seasons.

MW Senior Girls hits 1,000 Points in Basketball as a Dragon player.

MW Girls Basketball played in the 3B State Semi-Final, a first!

Spring sports 2020 were canceled across Virginia due to a State of Emergency dealing with COVID-19 pandemic. 

 

Faculty Accolades

MW Science faculty member named 2018-19 VHSL Tennis Coach of the Year.

MW Science faculty member awarded 2018-19 Mideast-Section Tennis Coach of the Year by the NFHS.

MW English faculty member in residence at the Moulin a Nef Artists’ Colony, August 2019.

MW English faculty member receives NEH grant for Summer Institute in Cortez, CO, summer 2019.

MW Senior Counselor earns College Board Recognition.

MW Jazz Instructor becomes a published composer.
