The Beat Goes On!

In addition to great teaching and learning, this week at Mil-wigs was filled with many events that mark our advance into the fall semester.

On Monday we began planning for school year 16-17 (can you believe it!?) by engaging juniors in consideration of senior year seminar/mentorship.  Ms. Parker will follow this with a presentation opportunity for parents on Monday evening in our auditorium at 6:00pm for interested parents.

Our counseling team hosted high school counseling leaders from Chesterfield Schools on Tuesday…making strong connections and building relationships with our partners has proven very helpful especially in terms of operationalizing new/changing counseling protocols.

Our math team hosted the Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Math on Tuesday afternoon…in addition to hosting, several of our teachers presented and others were able to share their expertise with other mathematics educators in the region.

Our Science National Honor Society held its induction ceremony this week and retiring Dragon Phil Tharp finally met the necessary requirements for induction and was presented his certificate…better late than never.  As the featured speaker, Phil shared how the limited opportunities he had in science (his academic area of affinity) as a high school student in the Mountaineer state led him to invest his career in making advanced instruction in science available to students.  Thousands of students are surely happy he did.

The National Honor Society held its induction ceremony as well.  Approximately 140 students were smoothly welcomed into this scholarly community.  Featured speaker Dr. Lisa Freiman (director of Richmond’s new Institute for Contemporary Art) challenged students to keep their imagination alive.

During picture make-ups this week, the Dragon made an appearance as a member of the freshman class.

We continue to press onward into the recruitment season…to date we have conducted 25 middle school presentations and have only 4 remaining!  In addition, beginning in November we will advertise for our information forums on NPR and Radio 1.  This year we thought it would be appropriate to have our students provide the voice to our Radio 1 add.  SCA leaders thus recently went to the studio and impressed everyone with a flawless “one take” performance!

Athletic teams (B/G X Country, B/G Volleyball, Field Hockey) continue to battle, Golf is in the clubhouse, and the fall Drama set build/preparations/rehearsals continue!  Go Dragons Go!

Finally…parent teacher conferences on November 3 from 12noon-7pm.  We will release the sign-up genius on Tuesday afternoon, October 27.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our amazing students!
