Walker Model Congress

Maggie Walker’s Model Congress conference (Walker Model Congress), will take place on February 12-13, 2016. The event expects to welcome middle and high school delegates from across the region who will debate relevant policy issues.

WMC promotes awareness of relevant policy issues in our community. To achieve this goal, the conference pursues two strategies: providing notable keynote figures to speak to delegates about issues relevant to the lives of Americans; and, providing forums for students to debate relevant policy issues and pass bills which address real problems.

On Friday, February 12, Walker Model Congress is proud to welcome Dr. Mary Frances Berry. For over four decades, Berry has been one of the most recognized and respected voices in our nation’s civil rights, gender equality and social justice movements. Serving as Chairperson of the US Civil Rights Commission, Berry led the charge for equal rights and liberties for all Americans over the course of four Presidential administrations. A trailblazer for women and African Americans alike, she also became the first woman of any race to head a major research university, serving at the University of Colorado at Boulder. On Saturday, February 13, WMC will hear from Congressman Dave Brat. Following his stunning primary victory, Congressman Brat was elected in November 2014 and has since represented Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. In the House of Representatives, Congressman Brat serves on three committees: Budget, Education and Workforce, and Small Business. Prior to serving in Congress, Congressman Brat taught Economics at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA.

WMC is also dedicated to raising money for charity. Walker Model Congress students from all grade levels participate in school fundraisers, culminating in conference donations and merchandise sales during the weekend. This year, the selected WMC charity is Teach for America.
