World Leaders to Visit GSMUN XVIII

On the weekend of March 20-21, 2015, both the Richmond Forum and the 18th Annual Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School Model United Nations Conference (GSMUN XVIII) will bring the region together to learn about our world.

Dr. Ben Bernanke, former Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, will stop by for an hour at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School on Saturday, March 21 to speak with middle and high school students from the Richmond region.

Professor Ruchira Gupta, founder of Apne Aap Women Worldwide, has also graciously accepted an invitation to visit Maggie Walker on Saturday, March 21. Every year, GSMUN affirms its commitment to the international community by selecting a conference charity. Apne Aap Women Worldwide is a grassroots organization in India working to end sex trafficking by increasing choices for at-risk girls and women. Apne Aap started off as a small NGO in Mumbai, India that offered a safe haven for girls and women, but has grown to reach over 21,000 women and girls. GSMUN is extremely proud and excited to host two such influential world leaders.

GSMUN brings middle and high school students together from surrounding counties and cities to debate important international issues and to develop diplomacy in the next generation of world leaders. In March, over 500 delegates from 30 schools in Virginia and beyond will discuss, debate, and find solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing our world today.

Our delegates will discuss a variety of issues over the weekend in committees led by Governor’s School students, which include historical committees such as the French National Assembly as well as a simulation of Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament . The students of Maggie Walker cannot wait to welcome Dr. Ben Bernanke, Ruchira Gupta, and all of the GSMUN XVIII delegates to our school in March.
