The 2025 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held in the MLWGS gymnasium on Thursday, February 6th, showcasing some outstanding representatives of the school’s legacy.  The ceremony host is Ms. Paige Hawkins, MLWGS Athletic Director.

Inductees included: 

Mr. Clyde ‘aka Clydie-The Glide’ Austin – MWHS Class of 1976 – Basketball

Clyde Austin graduated from MWHS in 1976 and is considered one of the best high school basketball players to come out of Richmond. From 1972-1976 he led his team in points with a total of 2,158, and this was before the 3-point line was implemented. Clyde led his team to a State AAA Championship in 1976.

After MW, Clyde played for the North Carolina State Wolfpack totaling 1,383 and 473 assists. His career saw him being drafted to play for the Philadelphia 76ers. After the NBA Clyde played eight years for the Harlem Globetrotters.

Clyde now resides in Nevada.

Mr. Peter Goergen – MLWGS Class of 2004, Basketball

Peter Goergen graduated from MLWGS in 2004, where he served as captain of the Varsity Basketball team during his sophomore to senior years and the Varsity Baseball team in his senior year. On the basketball court, Peter earned All-District honors from his sophomore to senior years, receiving First-Team All-District and All-Region distinctions in his senior year. He also made the All-District Team in baseball during his senior year.

After graduating from MLWGS, Peter briefly played basketball at the University of Mary Washington before attending the University of Virginia. While there, he played club basketball, coached recreational basketball, and graduated with distinction. He later earned his MBA with honors from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

During his twenties, Peter coached AAU basketball and worked as a real estate developer in Charlottesville, VA. He now resides in Golden, CO, with his wife, Rebecca, their daughter Katharine (Kit), and their dog, Fenn. Peter continues to develop and invest in commercial real estate and has transitioned from playing basketball to enjoying more leisurely sports like trail running, cycling, and uphill skiing.

Rev. Dr. Ayanna Jones – MLWGS Class of 2001 – Track

Rev. Dr. Ayanna Jones is a graduate of the class of 2001. During her sophomore year at the Governor’s School, she joined the track and field team as a shotput and discus thrower. As a member of the track and field team, she earned several honors and broke several records. She holds the Colonial District shotput record and the MW/TJ records for shotput and discus. Ayanna continued her track and field career at the College of William and Mary, where she broke the shotput and weight throw records while earning all CAA and CAA championship titles.  Her career PRs are as follows: Shotput 48’ 6”; Discus 122’ 3”; Weight Throw 53’10.25”; and Hammer 139’4”. After her track career at William and Mary, she coached throws for VCU, Bailey Bridge Middle, Manchester High, and Huguenot High.

Ayanna holds B.A. degrees in English and Ethnomusicology from the College of William and Mary; an M.T. in Secondary English Education from VCU; an M.A. in Supervision and Leadership and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Liberty University.  She has been a high school English teacher at Manchester High and Huguenot High, an assistant principal at Lucy Addison Middle, an Academic Director at Rowad Al Khaleej International and is currently the Academic Director for Saudi International School. Ayanna also became an ordained minister at Tabernacle Baptist Church in 2015.

Ayanna has dedicated her life to helping others and believes the greatest honor is being a reflection of her mother, Jil Bean, who taught Ayanna unto whom much is given, much is also required.

Mr. Robert ‘Bob’ Jones II – MWHS Class of 1970 – Football and Track

Bob Jones graduated from MWHS in 1970. In his sophomore year, Bob was awarded ‘Most Valuable Athlete in Track and Field’ and in his junior year, he was the district and regional champion in the 100, 200, 4×100, 4×200, and the mile relay.

His running accomplishments led to a ‘football’ scholarship as a defensive back for Virginia State University, where he also continued his track and field participation. At VSU, Bob’s team won the 3 CIAA Championship.

Bob resides in the Richmond area and has shared his athletic talents locally for the last twenty years as a coach.

Dr. Brittany L. Jones – MLWGS Class of 2007 – Basketball

Dr. Brittany L. Jones graduated from Maggie Walker Governor’s School in 2007. During her time at Maggie Walker Brittany played varsity basketball all four years, leading the team in scoring each year. 

Over her four years playing varsity basketball at Maggie Walker, Brittany recorded a total of 1,292 career points and 778 rebounds, and she also made the All-Academic team all four years.

Brittany’s stellar basketball career earned her a full Division I basketball scholarship to the University of North Florida. In 2009, Brittany transferred to Longwood University, with another full basketball Division I scholarship, where she finished her basketball career. In 2011, she graduated from Longwood University with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in History and Anthropology.

In May 2023, Brittany earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education from Michigan State University—the number one school in the country for Elementary and Secondary Education.

As a second-year professor, Brittany has already published over 20 journal articles and book chapters. She has received prestigious awards for her work, including two national dissertation awards and the 2023 National Council for the Social Studies Exemplary Research Award for her exploration of the racialized discursive implications of how fear is discussed in Virginia’s U.S. history standards.

Brittany will forever be thankful to the sport that taught her perseverance, shaped her character, and helped pave the way for her success in academia and beyond.
