MLWGS students explored history in Lorton, VA

Students in Lorton, VA

In honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, Dr. Christine Anderson’s course, “Gender, Politics, and Consumerism in a Global Context,” visited Lorton, VA, on Friday, March 6. The group toured the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial, the only national memorial dedicated to women’s suffrage in the United States, as well as the Lorton Prison and the Lucy Burns Museum. During the visit, students learned about the experiences of suffragists who were imprisoned at Occoquan for picketing at the White House in their fight for women’s voting rights.

The students stood in front of the original White House fence, which suffragists picketed during President Woodrow Wilson’s administration, wearing the traditional colors of women’s suffrage: purple, gold, and white. This historic fence is now incorporated into the national memorial.
