For months, and in some cases, over a year, the seniors at Maggie Walker Governor’s School have been preparing for their final art presentation: the Maggie Walker Senior Art Exhibition.
In the Maggie Walker art program, Art 4 & 5 students focus on building a body of work through the development of a personal theme. These classes involve multiple group and individual critiques, gallery visits, and individual studio time spent producing art. These students have worked tirelessly to prepare their work in a professional environment and to share their hard work with family, friends, and the Richmond community.
The show is named Mosaic to exemplify the variety of themes and pieces of artwork the talented high school students have spent many months developing. With the work of 13 people being presented, there will be a wide range of topics explored and expressed.
- Cam Meacham (Art 4) uses books and fairytales to inspire her whimsical sculptures.
- Elena Loy (Art 5) explores perception through color expression and figures in watercolor, acrylic, and gouache paints.
- Skye Cummings (Art 5) portrays figures with body-horror elements through a collage of high contrast acrylic shapes with illustrative ink lines.
- Hiya Agrawal (Art 5) depicts personal relationships and emotions with ink on paper in her series “Deflowered.”
- Ashley Booker (Art 5) uses acrylic paint on canvas and other elements to express the development of identity and culture.
- Mercedes Luna (Art 5) develops art through a scientific lens, using chemical reactions and scientific methodology to create abstract mixed-media artwork.
- Samantha Schappert (Art 5) is working on her series “good luck charms” and challenging the mundane.
- Molly Morrison (Art 5) designs and molds abstract sculptures using negative space and charcoal drawings of her work.
- Ruby Freyer (Art 5) creates vivid paintings with acrylic paint, on the topic of “Routine” and domestic spaces.
- Matthew Bond (Art 5) crafts comics and paintings of animals through geometric patterns.
- Amelia Adcock (Art 5) embraces multimedia artwork with motifs of nature, darkness, and nostalgia.
- Matilda Frantz (Art 5) paints beautiful watercolor artwork depicting family and culture.
- Om Ajith (Art 4) is a comic creator and figure-drawer.
This show is a testament to the hard work of these seniors and their commitment to the art program at Maggie Walker. We hope that you will join us for our opening from 6 – 8 pm the night of May 9th at Artworks Gallery (320 Hull St, Richmond, VA 23224). The exhibition runs until May 17th.
