VIRTUAL Instruction on Monday, January 26

Dear Students and Families,

When weather conditions require a school closure, Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School will shift to a virtual learning day. We want to be clear about what students and families should expect so the day is structured, manageable, and supportive.

A virtual snow day is not a full in-person school day moved online. Our goal is to maintain learning while recognizing the realities of weather, power outages, internet access, and home responsibilities.

Here is what you can expect:

Class Meetings

  • Each class will begin with a brief live (synchronous) check-in, typically 10 minutes and no more than 30 minutes.
  • This time will be used for attendance, reviewing the agenda, clarifying expectations, and answering questions.
  • After the live check-in, students will transition to independent (asynchronous) work.

Student Workload

  • Students should expect approximately 3-4 total hours of work across all classes for the day.
  • Assignments will focus on review, practice, reading, or continued work on existing projects.
  • Students will not be given major tests or large new assignments on virtual snow days.

Flexibility

  • Most work can be completed at any time during the day.
  • Deadlines will be end of day or the next class session, with flexibility built in.
  • Students who experience power or internet outages will be excused and allowed to complete work later without penalty.
  • Student cameras may be off at the teacher’s discretion, or students can decide to blur their background

Attendance

  • Attendance will be taken during the brief live check-in at the beginning of each class.
  • If a student cannot attend due to weather-related issues, families should notify the school as usual; the absence will be excused.

We know our students are highly motivated and often place significant pressure on themselves. Virtual snow days are designed to provide structure without adding unnecessary stress, while prioritizing safety and well-being.

Thank you for your partnership and understanding.

Sincerely,

MLWGS Admin Team

The week before school reopens is always a little bit of everything. A School Board meeting, orientations, scrimmages, laptops, last-minute details, and plenty of problem solving. A parent shared with me that her child walked through our doors this past Monday knowing no one and left with so many new friends. Mr. Coleman, Dr. Loving,…

AY27 Snapshot #2: Coming back to life

The mornings are getting darker, summer is winding down, and there is a different kind of energy around school. I guess I should be sad to see summer go, but that means the school year is right around the corner. And, of course, school supplies. I already have pastel pencils, felt-tip pens, binders, and more…
