School Successes

MLWGS ranked #2 Best Public High School and #2 Best College Prep Public High School in Virginia by Niche.  MLWGS ranked #1 for Best Public High School Teachers in Virginia.

MLWGS ranked #5 in Best Public High Schools in the US by Newsweek in 2021.

The Class of 2021 had 189 Graduates

  • As a class, they have performed a total of 32,614 community service hours. This is an average of approximately 173 hours per student.
  • One student, Pamela Calderon (Chesterfield), had 1225 hours of community service.
  • As a class, they earned a minimum of $14,701,022 ($14.7 million) in scholarship offers as of June 10th and that number continues to grow.
  • The average Grade Point Average was a 4.27
  • The average SAT score was 1422 and ACT is 32.
  • They are going to 62 different colleges, 120 are staying in-state, 64 are going out of state, 3 are attending college outside the United States, and 1 is joining the Marine Corps. 6 students are planning to take a gap year.
  • 10 were National Merit Finalists and 44 more received Commendations in the National Merit Program. 3 were offered National Merit Scholarships.
  • 2 were Presidential Scholar candidates.
  • In total, the Class of 2021 was recognized with 396 different honors, awards, and scholarships!

MLWGS AP Scholars in 2020 = 290 with an average score of 4.23.  96.1% of our students that tested earned a 3 or higher score.

2020 SAT Score Averages = MLWGS 1400, Virginia 1116, and Nation wide 1051.

Summer Residential Governor’s Academies were canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Student Successes

MW senior take 3rd place in the Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals Essay Contest.

MW Junior was selected for VESSS and SEES and VCU Medical Science Internship.

(2) MW juniors win scholarships for a 4-week Spanish Immersion Program, summer 2022.

Three Dragons qualify as Student Of The Year candidates for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).  

MW Junior accepted into summertime The National Security Language Initiative for Youth

MW senior selected as one of the top 300 scholars in The Regeneron Science Talent Search. 

MW senior awarded Straubel Foundation Leadership Award.

MW senior was awarded the Virginia 4-H Youth-in-Action Award. 

 

Team Successes

MLWGS 2020 Yearbook wins 1st Place and Excellent Awards.

Five Dragons advance to and compete in the State Contest for Virginia History Day.

MW team designated top Finalist in the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling against 800 worldwide competing teams.

Math Modeling team wins scholarship money from contest participation. 

We the People team wins the VA State title in January 2021 for its 22nd win at this championship.  The team will advance to Nationals later in the spring of 2021. Maggie Walker Team Wins National Championship in 2021 making this the team’s 4th national title.

MW team wins the 2021 Governor’s Economics and Personal Finance Challenge.

Quiz Bowl Team wins the 2021 VHSL 3A State Championship. 

MW team earns an Official Selection in the VHSL Film Festival. Team wins Audience Choice Award.

2021 Regional Scholastic Art Awards: MLWGS had 50 total awards: 7 Gold Keys including 1 American Vision Nominee,  14 Silver Keys including 1 Silver Key Portfolio, and 25 Honorable Mentions including 3 Honor Mention Portfolios.  

MW junior receives Gold Medal and American Vision Medal at National Scholastic Art Awards.

2021 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards: MLWGS had 15 students win awards including 3 Gold Keys, 5 Silver Keys, and 12 Honorable Mentions.  

MW Debate wins Catholic Forensic League Sweepstake, qualifies for State Championship.

MW Math Modeling places a record number of 9 teams in the Modeling the Future Challenge semi-finals. 

MW Dragons advance to All-District Chorus.

MW Dragons are eligible to audition for Virginia All-Orchestra.

MW junior earns 1st Violin Section for Virginia All-Orchestra

 

Athletic Success

MW Boys and Girls Indoor Track & Field teams dominated their Group 3 regional competition and both brought home team titles.

MW Senior takes 3A State title for Girls 55m Hurdles at Indoor Track Championship.

(2) Seniors named RTD Athlete of the Year Finalists.

MW Cross-Country teams…girls win at Regionals, Boys take 2nd place. The girls’ team places 4th at State and the boys’ team places 7th. 

Boys Volleyball wins VHSL State Runner-Up Title for the Second Consecutive Year.

MW Girls Golfer competes for State title after finishing tied for 3rd in a field of 23 at Regionals.

Faculty Accolades

Fine Arts Department Chair awarded Outstanding Regional Educator.

Math Faculty member awarded The School Support Award from The Actuarial Foundation.
