School Successes

MLWGS ranked #4 Best Public High Schools in America and #1 Best Public High School in Virginia in 2022 by Niche.  MLWGS ranked #1 for Best Public High School Teachers in Virginia.

MLWGS ranked #5 Best Public High Schools in America by stacker.com. 

The Class of 2022:

  • As a class, they have performed a total of 29,677.75 community service hours. This is an average of approximately 164 hours per student.
  • One student reported 562.5 hours of community service.
  • As a class, they earned a minimum of $15,284,770 ($15.3 million) in scholarship offers as of June 2nd, and that number continues to grow.
  • The average Grade Point Average was 4.266 (preliminary numbers).
  • The average SAT score was 1401* and ACT is 35* (preliminary numbers).
  • They are going to 63 different colleges, 115 are staying in-state, 59 are going out of state, 3 are attending college outside the United States, and one will study in Moldova for one year on a NSLI-Y Scholarship. 3 students are planning to take a gap year.
  • 15 were National Merit Finalists and 47 more received Commendations in the National Merit Program. 3 were offered National Merit Scholarships.
  • 2 were Presidential Scholar candidates.
  • In total, the Class of 2022 was recognized with 407 different honors, awards, and scholarships!

MLWGS senior is its first NHS Scholarship Finalist.

MLWGS AP Scholars in 2021 = 292 with an average score of 4.14.  96.08% of our students that tested earned a 3 or higher score.

Virginia History Day Competition – multiple winners in various categories. One student advances to the National Competition. 

 

Student Successes

MW Senior takes Gold Medal in National Russian Essay Contest.

MW Junior awarded ‘Outstanding Delegate’ at the Yale Model UN Conference

MW Junior qualifies to compete in the USA Physics Competition. 

 

Team Successes

Dragons win at SABR Analytics Conference, making this five wins out of six years and tied with Syracuse University for wins. 

MW competes, and wins, against colleges in baseball stats competition. 

MW Mech Tech Dragons (Robotics) judged trophy class team by the VHSL

MW Quiz Bowl team wins top prize at the VCU season finale championship tournament. 

MW Quiz Bowl team at the High School National Championship.  Senior wins ‘Rising Star Award.’

We the People team wins the VA State title in January 2022 for its 23rd win at this championship.  Team places in 5th place at Nationals

2022 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards: MLWGS had 8 students win awards including 5 Gold Keys, 4 Silver Keys, 1 American Voices Nominee, and 2 Honorable Mentions.  

2022 Regional Scholastic Art Awards: MLWGS had numerous students earn 16 Gold Keys, 1 Gold Key Portfolio, 19 Silver Keys, 1 Silver Key Portfolio, 28 Honorable Mentions and 3 Honorable Mentions Portfolios. 

Dragon Chess takes 1st Place in U1400 VA Scholastic Tournament.

The MLWGS orchestras brought home THREE superior ratings at their assessments!

Twelve Dragons qualify for Senior Regional Orchestra.  Nine freshmen accepted into the 2022 Central Virginia Regional Orchestra. 

Eleven Dragons performed for District Band, where six were selected to audition for All-Virginia Band.

MW Junior wins 2nd Place in the 7th Congressional District Art Contest. 

MLWGS Student Submission Designated Official Entry in the 2022 VHSL Film Festival.   Takes 2nd Place with this submission. 

 

Athletic Successes

Nine Senior Dragons sign NCAA National Letter of Intent commitments. 

Boys Volleyball wins VHSL State Runner-Up Title for the Third Consecutive Year.

MW Cross-Country teams…girls and boys both win at Regionals, Boys take 2nd place. The girls’ team wins 1st Place at State Championship and the boys’ team places 2nd

MW Swim teams, boys and girls, both win 1st Place at VHSL Class 3 Swimming Championship. 

MW Senior wins takes 1st Place in 3B VHSL Regional Diving

MW Senior takes 1st Place at VHSL Class 3 Wresting Championship.

Walker Boys & Girls Tennis are VHSL Region 3B Champions. Girls Team State Champions.  Boys Team State Champions.

Girls Spring Track: Regional Champions/VHSL State Runner-Up Champions.

Boys Spring Track: Regional Champions/VHSL State Runner-Up Champions.

 

Faculty Successes

Two MW faculty members are 2021 R.E.B. and Community Foundation winners, plus one finalist. 

Two MW faculty members win the 2022 Pat Taylor Teaching Award.

Language Dept. Chair wins 2022 AATSEEL Award for Excellence in Teaching.

MW freshman publishes opinion in the Virginia Mercury News “Fully Fund Our Schools”

MWHS alumnus Bob Dandridge – NBA Hall of Fame Inductee Celebration at MLWGS on June 11th
