School Successes

MLWGS ranked #4 Best Public High School in America and #1 Best Public High School in Virginia in 2022 by Niche.  MLWGS ranked #1 for Best Public High School Teachers in Virginia.

MLWGS AP Results in 2021-2022.  471 students took 1,233 exams with 97.03% of our students that tested earning a 3 or higher score.

The MLWGS National Honor Society donates 250 coats to Coats for Kids. 

MW 2022 Yearbook Wins First Place with Special Merit Award from the American Scholastic Press Association

          The Class of 2023

  • The Class of 2023 had ​179 Graduates (some of the totals below are updated from the May report)
  •  As a class, they have performed a total of ​40,432.75 community service hours. This is an average of approximately ​226 hours per student.
  • Carson Wang (Henrico) reported 773 hours of community service.
  • As a class, they earned $13.3 million in scholarship offers as of May 16th, and that number continues to grow.
  • The average GPA was ​4.3. 
  • The average SAT score was ​1410 and ACT is ​31 (official numbers in the fall).
  • They are going to ​63 different colleges, ​107 are staying in-state, ​66 are going out-of-state, ​and four are attending college outside the United States.  ​One student is planning to take a gap year.  Bethany Robinson (Prince George) has enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
  • Fourteen were National Merit Finalists and ​45 more received Commendations in the National Merit Program. Four were offered National Merit ScholarshipsOne was awarded a corporate-sponsored scholarship through National Merit.
  • Four were Presidential Scholar candidates.
  • In total, the Class of 2023 was recognized with ​371 honors, awards, and scholarships!

Dragons create PSA for hitting Cancer below the belt.

Sophomore Dragon Advances to the State Competition for Virginia History Day

MW Students Earn Summer Travel Awards from Language Honor Societies. 

MW freshman accepts scholarship for summer travel and study to Germany, 2023.

Senior has work selected for juried art exhibition in Nova Scotia, Summer 2023. 

Dragon named as BoB Squad Post-Season All-Star

 

Team Successes

GSMUN raises over $12,000 for charity at March 2023 Conference. 

Walker Debate wins 1st Place at Regionals

We the People team wins the VA State title in January 2023 for its 24th win at this championship. MLWGS wins the WTP National Championship, April 2023, its 5th national title in its 25th appearance. 

MW Quiz Bowl wins 1st Place at VHSL 3B Regional and 1st Place at VHSL State Championship.  Quiz Bowl team competes at NAQT nationals in Atlanta with one player winning an individual award .

MW Latin Students win Gamma Division of the 934d Annual Latin Tournament. 

MW Students Take 1st and 2nd Places at Super Regional Forensics Tournament.

Dragons compete for the first time in the National Japan Bowl

Mech Tech Dragons (robotics) have their most successful performance yet at FIRST Championship in Houston .

Technology Students Association (TSA) names MLWGS students as State President and Vice-President at Technosphere. Three others named event finalists at same event. 

2022-23 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards: MLWGS had many students winning 24 awards including 3 Gold Keys, 1 American Voices Nominee, 9 Silver Keys, and 11 Honorable Mentions.  

2022-23 Regional Scholastic Art Awards: MLWGS had numerous students earn 69 awards; 28 Gold Keys, including 2 Gold Key Art Portfolios, 1 Gold Key Photo Portfolio, and 1 American Visions Nominee. 14 Silver Keys, including 1 Silver Key Art Portfolio and 1 Silver Key Photo Portfolio.  27 Honorable Mentions with 3 Honorable Mention Art Portfolios and 1 Photo Honor Mention Portfolio. 

Senior Wins National Gold Medal & American Visions Award in Scholastic Art & Writing. 

MLWGS Drama presents MacBeth, November 17-19, 2022, and Emma: A Pop Musical February 23-25, 2023.

A record number of MLWGS students accepted to District Band 2023. Then Audition for All-Virginia Band. 

MLWGS Advanced and Intermediate Orchestras received Excellent ratings.

MLWGS wins VHSL 2021-22 National Guard Cup (announced July 2022)

 

Academic Successes

Six seniors sign NCAA National Letter of Intent on Signing Day, May 2023. 

MLWGS Senior named RTD Boys Scholar Athlete of the Month.   3 seniors named RTD Scholar Athlete of the Year finalists.

MLWGS Awarded VHSL 22-23 Fall Sportsmanship Honor Roll and VHSL 22-23 Winter Sportsmanship Honor Roll

MW Girls tennis takes 1st Place at Regionals and the VHSL State Championship.  Girl’s team has an undefeated season.

MW Boys tennis takes 1st Place at Regionals and the VHSL State Championship.  

Walker Girls track wins the VHSL Region 3B Championship.

Walker Girls Swim takes 1st Place at State Championship, Boys team takes 2nd. For the girls, this is the second consecutive year to win the championship. Regionals saw the same results as State. 

MW Cross-Country teams…girls and boys both win at Regionals, boys take 1st place and girls take 2nd, November 2022.  Girl’s team takes 2nd at State Championship

Three Dragons Named RTD All-Metro Swimmers.

MW Senior Named VHSL Boys Volleyball Player of the Year plus First-Team All State.  One other volleyball player also named First-Team All State.  The boys volleyball team finished State runner-up at the championship. Additionally, four players named First-Team All-Region. 

 

Faculty Successes

MW Coach Named VHSL Volleyball Coach of the Year.

MLWGS Librarian publishes article in School Library Connection, fall 2022.

Math Teacher Awarded Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Teaching

Social Studies faculty member awarded the 2023 Pat Taylor Teaching Award.

Teacher wins Scholarship for Summer 2023 Study at Oxford University.
